Dolly Sods – Lion’s Head


We timed the leaves just right. I was anxious for two weeks prior, hoping that the weekend of October 10th would bring good weather and a good time to catch a glimpse of peak fall foliage. I had only heard stories and seen pictures of how the meadows of Dolly Sods catch fire in the fall with unusual red color, and we were grateful enough to be there for it! I originally planned to do the 21 mile trek through Dolly Sods North and looping down past Lion’s Head in the southern portion of the Sods, but I adjusted the route to shorten it to 16.2 miles to make it easier on the gang. We turned it into a shuttle hike, parking one car at the Bear Rocks Trailhead and a second car about 4 miles down the Forest Road 75 at the Fisher Spring Run Trailhead.
